Needing a Continuing Theme

Ramblings I've been rereading Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland for a discussion group and a sentence really captured my attention. "With individual artworks it means leaving some loose thread, some unresolved issue, to carry forward and explore in the next piece." I realized that was the problem I had after completing Kambaba Jasper.
I had many many ideas for what to do next, but they were all in isolation, with no real way to choose between them except by carefully re-examining each, which was extremely frustrating. If I'd had a question or connection to move me forward then I could have just kept creating.
I know what I'd like my theme to be - faces - but I just don't feel skilled enough for that at the moment. I want to do more drawing and many small trial pieces before I use the subject matter in footstep layerings. And I do plan to do that.
But for now I'm going to work with something that appealed to me about Kite-Flying in Zandvoort. Thirds. I will start each piece with a division of the canvas into three areas, which don't need to be equal, nor divided by straight lines. There will be plenty of ways to fit whims of subject matter and material usage into this basic structure and keep me moving creatively.
