Artist's Statement

I believe that we are like the blind men with the elephant, each only able to describe one aspect of the beast.  It is important to me to remember this; that there is always more than one point of view on any subject.  I envision complex works that layer ideas and media to visually represent these thoughts.  Currently I am exploring how I can change the way that the paint, paper, fabric, and stitch interact in a given piece.  In the end, each artwork that I create brings me a step closer to being able to make what I imagine real.

Biography

artistpicture.jpg  Beth Robinson is an artist who in early 2004 came to the unexpected realization that being able to draw realistically was not actually necessary for the creation of art.  This epiphany sparked experimentation in, reading about, and playing with various media until she began to develop a focus for her future work.  She is currently expanding her skills in order to take her mixed media pieces to greater levels of unity and complexity.

Beth began with a cross-stitch hobby that evolved into an interest in embroidery, creating original designs, and the discovery of modern fiber arts.  The stitch remains an integral part of her work, but it is only one aspect of layering combinations of paint, paper, fabric, thread, beads, and occasional other oddities.

Beth holds an M.S. and a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering and a B.A. in English.  She is currently happily employed as a product development chemist for an adhesives company and lives in Bucks County, PA with her husband and three grey tabby cats.

Why Pumpkin12pm?

pumpkin12pmetsy.jpg Pumpkin12pm is my primary online identity. I use this name on auction sites, discussion boards, and other similar places.  Checking for "Pumpkin12pm" can be an additional assurance that you are looking at my work or words and not those of another Beth Robinson, which is a common name.

When I was in college I had a tendency to go to bed early, before midnight anyway, which is early for college.  The longer I stayed up, the fuzzier my thoughts became.  One night I was up late chatting when I said something that made little since.  One of my friends jokingly made a comment about Beth's brain turning into a pumpkin.  The idea stuck and was referred to repeatedly over the years.

When I found my first online forum back in my cross-stitch days I had to pick a user name for the first time.  I froze.  And then the pumpkin comment came to mind.  Unfortunately Pumpkin was already taken. So I tried MidnightPumpkin.  Nope.  Pumpkin12pm?  Success!

I'd like to claim I was setting this account up after midnight so I'd have an excuse for making a fuzzy sort of mistake.  Unfortunately, I just goofed.  You see, 12 pm is NOON.  Midnight is 12 am.  By the time this clicked I had my identity established and I didn't want to change.

I kept my name as Pumpkin12pm as I moved from talking about cross-stitching to creating mail art to joining artists' boards and finally to setting up a blog and store.  I've found it has one great advantage; if you type it into a search engine it's always me that comes up, at least so far.
